'Twisted' Beetle, lifted Miata make for off-road classic compacts

Both are cute cars customized for off-road fun--though they take very different approaches

One of the greatest joys in the automotive hobby involves taking a vehicle and plunging it into environs for which is was never intended. Limos on lift kits, Bentleys on rally courses--there's no shortage of wild builds constructed for the sole purpose of inducing a few off-road grins.

The first is from a company called Twisted Automotive, a group which usually deals with Land Rovers but in this instance decided to apply its strengths to a classic Volkswagen Beetle. Seeking to recall the too-fun Baja Bugs of the '60s and '70s, Twisted's "TBug" retains its air-cooled flat-four engine but cranks the wick on a strengthened chassis, lifted suspension, and set of knobby BFGoodrich tires.

The company says it has infused some 80 horsepower into the thing, fair double what the original car produced. A long-travel suspension is said to soak up off-road punishment, while modern upgrades like LED lighting and a hand-finished interior push the project even further upfield. A flex of the driver's right foot will push it further upfield, as well.
