Two types of vehicles stood out as the body styles most targeted by thieves in 2024, according to new data from Équité Association. Drivers of compact crossovers and full-size pickup trucks were the most common victims of vehicle theft last year.

Unsurprisingly, then, the most stolen vehicle last year was the Toyota RAV4, particularly those from the 2021 model year. Other similar vehicles make the list, such as the Honda CR-V, Lexus RX, and Toyota Highlander also making the top ten.

Pickup trucks were also frequently stolen, and the Ram 1500 earned the title of the second most stolen vehicle in Canada last year. Other popular trucks also make the list, such as the Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra, and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra.

While this list is no doubt painful for owners compact crossovers and pickups, their place as some of the most popular vehicles in Canada means that their popularity among thieves is unsurprising. Indeed, the only outliers on the national top 10 list are the ever-popular Honda Civic and Jeep Wrangler, which place in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Data from specific provinces follows a similar trend, though there were some regional peculiarities. In Alberta, only trucks and SUVs made the top ten list. Meanwhile, maritime provinces saw more passenger car thefts than any other Canadian region, with the Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic all making the list for the region.

Notably, premium brands are largely absent from the list, with the only major exception nationally being the Lexus RX, while the Range Rover barely made it onto Ontario's top 10 list. However, the luxury SUV was, per capita, the most frequently stolen vehicle among the province's most stolen vehicles by volume, with around 3.5 per cent of registered Range Rovers being stolen.

The provinces with the greatest number of overall vehicle thefts were Quebec and Ontario, naturally reflecting the higher population of the two provinces.

Overall, the theft trends for 2024 are very similar, with pickup trucks and crossovers also being the most commonly stolen vehicle types in previous years. Trends by model were also familiar, with the Jeep Wrangler, Honda Civic, Toyota RAV4, and RAM 1500 making the top ten list in 2023.
