Red-light cameras definitely prevent mid-intersection accidents. Or so says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, the IIHS also says that, so effective are these red-light safety cameras, that some motorists are slamming on their brakes to avoid penalty, only to be -- you guessed it -- rear-ended by someone not quite so diligent. In insurance institute-speak, red-light cameras are "associated with an increase in less severe rear-end crashes due to a rise in sudden stops at equipped intersections."

If you're thinking "damned if you, damned if you don't," you're grasping the situation correctly. Oh, a right angle, mid-intersection crash will almost always be more injurious than a rear-ender. For one thing, speeds are usually a little slower when you get bumped in the rear. More importantly, 90-degree collisions are the most dangerous crashes for the simple reason that there's a lot less crumple zone in a door than in the front end -- or rear end -- of a vehicle. Nonetheless, any crash is both unwarranted and unwanted.

That "running a red" is dangerous is without question. In 2023, the IIHS says that no fewer than a thousand people were killed and more than 136,000 injured in crashes in the United States that involved a driver running a red light. The institute also says red-light cameras are the most effective method of preventing drivers from running said reds. A study conducted in Philadelphia, for instance, showed that while extending the duration of a yellow light reduced red-light violations by 36%, adding a camera "boosted the effect by another 96%."

Despite those benefits, only 343 communities across America are currently operating red-light cameras, and the number of places using them has actually declined by more than a third since 2012. Community opposition is usually the reason cited for removing the cameras and, says the Institute, opponents are often using studies showing that cameras are associated with an increase in rear-end crashes to argue against them.
